How to identify types of bearing by using bearing number ?

HOW TO IDENTIFY BEARING NUMBER & BEARING TYPES? KNOW ALL ABOUT BEARINGS CLASSIFICATION, IDENTIFICATION, AND BEARING FIT.

Here on this topic, we will cover below topics,

1.importance of bearing
2.bearing classification
3.bearing number identification
4.bearing fits

1. IMPORTANCE OF BEARING :

the bearing is a friction reducing machine element.bearing also support and align rotating parts of the machine. usually bearing located on both side (drive & non-drive end) of the pump in bearing housing.
we already learn about different type of bearing in books now here we learn about how to quickly identify bearing from their numbers.

2. BEARING CLASSIFICATION :

classification of the commonly used industrial bearing as below,

Bearing classification

3. BEARING NUMBER IDENTIFICATION :

Designation of bearing for identification

For Example:-
Consider bearing number - 7315
7(First letter)     = indicate the bearing type
3(Second letter) = indicate Series for load carrying capacity
15(Third & forth letter) = indicate bore number (bore diameter)

  •  PREFIX
prefix for parts of standard bearings,

   L

For cylindrical roller bearings with a separable ring
   R

For cylindrical roller bearings with a roller set, the ring is not separable
  W

Large bore washer for a ball bearing (thrust)
  K

Cage with the rolling element (assembled)

  • DESIGNATION OF BASIC BEARING SERIES

FIRST DIGIT MEANING:-
DIGIT
BEARING TYPE
1

Self Aligning ball bearing
2

Spherical roller bearing
3

Tapered roller bearing
4
Deep groove double row ball bearing

5
Axial deep groove ball bearing
6
Deep groove ball bearing
7
Single row angular contact bearing
8
Axial cylindrical roller bearing

SECOND DIGIT MEANING:-
   1 No Series

 For Extra Light Duty
   2 No Series

 For Light Duty
   3 No Series

 For Medium Duty
   4 No Series
 For Heavy Duty

   8 No Series
 For Extra Thin Section
   9 No Series
 For Very Thin Section

LAST TWO DIGIT MEANING:-
BASIC NUMBER
BORE IN MM
00
10
01
12
02
15
03
17
From 04 basic numbers multiply by 5.
04
20
05
25
06
               30   So On...

  • SUFFIX:-
After bearing number there is some Alphabet behind bearing number this mean suffix and suffix use for many purposes as below,

SUFFIX  FOR  SPECIAL DESIGN
SUFFIX  FOR  CLEARANCE
SUFFIX  FOR  CAGE  DESIGN
Z     = Single shield bearing
C1 = Less clearance than standard
M  = Machined brass cage
ZZ   = Double shield bearing
C2 = Standard clearance
 H  = Snap cage
RS   = Single sealed bearing
C3 = More clearance than standard
 L   = Machine light metal cage
2RS = Double sealed bearing

NO SUFFIX = Normal accuracy and clearance
TN = Plastic cage
K     = Taper bore bearing
A   = Outer ring riding
N     = Circular groove in OD
 J   = Pressed steel cage
NR  = Circular groove in OD & snap ring
Y   = Pressed brass cage
D    = Bearing with split inner
race
B   = Inner ring riding

DIFFERENT TYPE OF BEARING FITS,

The ID of the bearing is,
1. in Interference fit = 0.002” to 0.004” above the OD of the shaft.
2. in Shrink fit = 0.001” below the OD of shaft
3. in Slip fit = 0.004” to 0.010” above the OD of shaft

BEARING FITTING TOOLS,

Bearing Heater
Bearing installation kit
Press

BEARING REMOVING TOOLS,

Bearing puller
Special fixture for bearing removal

So, being a mechanical engineer, we have to capability to quickly identify bearing. thanks for reading.
